Bay had noticed the random children the day before, and been smugly grateful it seemed to have passed her by. It wasn't that she was completely opposed to having kids someday, but right now? She didn't even really like to babysit.

She sprawled on her bed, idly flipping through a magazine as she appreciated her good fortune.

Yeah, that smug mood? Not going to last. Francesca had decided exploring the island was much more interesting without her mom around. But today, she was finally ready to go see Bay.

She pounded on the door.

Francesca's hands flew as she signed her reply.

The girl sighed. "Your signing is awful," she informed Bay, using her voice and her hands this time. Her speech was clear but carried a slight deaf accent. "It's okay. Dad mentioned you used to suck at it. You get better. Plus, I have hearing in one ear."

She flipped back one side of her hair, displaying a teal-colored hearing aid.

"So -- pizza?"

Francesca rolled her eyes. "My dad is Emmett," she confirmed. "When other-you told me this might happen, she mentioned you wouldn't believe that part. Which is ridiculous, you two are amazing together."

"You signed 'lousy' for 'logical,'" Francesca told her, but obligingly sat. "Hi. I'm Francesca." She showed her name sign instead of finger-spelling Francesca -- 'music' but with her fingers shaped into a finger-alphabet 'f.'

"I drum," Francesca told her. "Like Dad. But Uncle Toby showed me some chords, yeah."

"I knew you were smart, tiny mom," Francesca said happily.
